Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 20th Century America) for Friday, June 2, 2023 (Season 39, Game 190):
In bold letters, it was the 2-word historic N.Y. Times headline for August 9, 1974, followed by “He urges a time of ‘healing'”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Sylvia Izzo Hunter, a marketing manager from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Jong Limb, a retired software developer from Glen Allen, Virginia
Jared Watson, a quality control specialist from Greenville, Texas (1-day total: $14,000)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Jared Watson is your new champion on Jeopardy! after dethroning 2-day champion Ilhana Redzovic; on Reddit last night, Ilhana said she “was hitting a wall” and that she was “surprised by (and ultimately did not prepare [herself] for) how much the experience and the course of the day would impact [her] physically and emotionally”. That’s an absolutely underrated part of being a Jeopardy! champion, having to tape multiple games in generally quick succession. One thing that I am looking forward to—assuming that the ongoing WGA strike doesn’t completely upset the start of Season 40—is the return of all of the champions in the Champions’ Wildcard before the Tournament of Champions. (And, Sony, have you ever considered actually just paying your writers? Then, your cash cow might not be under threat.)
Onto today’s game, Jong Limb of Glen Allen, Virginia and Sylvia Izzo Hunter of Toronto are your challengers.
“If you know the name of the king or queen being murdered, press 1.” It absolutely put a smile on my face this morning to see the category YOU HAVE SELECTED REGICIDE on the list of categories in J!6—that reference from the Season 6 opener of The Simpsons, “Bart of Darkness”, is one of my favorites in the entire series.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

“NIXON RESIGNS” was the famous New York Times headline of August 9, 1974, following the previous day’s resignation of the President of the United States. It was also famous as one of the first two Times headlines set in 96-point type; the first was “MEN WALK ON MOON” on July 21, 1969. (That 96-point headline fact was a famous Final Jeopardy during Ken Jennings’ run in 2004; it ran in the episode where Ken passed $1 million, even though Ken did not get that Final correct).

Jong 3 correct 2 incorrect
Sylvia 2 correct 0 incorrect
Today’s interviews:

Double Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Inventors & Inventions; Women Authors; State Of The Union; It’S A Fact; Animal Rock; Words Ending In “Y”)
Sylvia had a chance to take the lead midway through Double Jeopardy, but went very conservative on her bet and ended up $300 short of taking the lead. From there, Jared turned on the afterburners, nearly turning the game into a runaway himself! (Unfortunately, a conservative Daily Double wager on his part kept the game from being put away.)
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Jared 31 correct 3 incorrect
Sylvia 13 correct 1 incorrect
Jong 6 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 30 (0 today).

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Jared $20,600 Sylvia $12,300 Jong $2,400)
Jared: Standard cover bet over Sylvia is $4,001. (Actual bet: $4,001)
Jong: The only thing I wouldn’t do is go all-in; this gives you a chance at second if Sylvia decides to go all in to try to maximize potential winnings. (Actual bet: $2,000)
Sylvia: I would bet at least $4,301 (thereby passing Jared if he’s incorrect), but I would also limit my bet to $7,499, therefore keeping Jong locked into second place. (Actual bet: $8,301)
