Electric lighting, when it was installed on Broadway in 1880, allowed for increased nighttime safety in New York City; people were no longer forced inside by the darkness. The city’s famed theatre district, also now able to illuminate its theatre marquees, added to the brightness. The nickname “Great White Way” to refer to Broadway dates to 1902 and the New York Evening Telegram.
Also, interestingly, because the road predates the New York City grid system—it originated as a Wickquasgeck trail on the island—some of the intersections are at unusual angles. This has led to architecture such as the Flatiron Building at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and East 22nd Street.

- The $2,300 Nikkee left on the table on Daily Double 2 certainly would have come in handy in Final. Had she bet even $900 more, it would have taken the game from a two-thirds game to a crush game—which would have given her victory after the Triple Stumper final.
