Originally known in his time as a portrait painter, Samuel Morse is best known today for his contributions to the invention of the single-wire telegraph, for the long-distance communication of messages. A telegraph line was constructed between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland, and the famous line “What hath God wrought” was sent as the “official” first telegraph message between the two cities on May 24, 1844.
In 2012, The Atlantic wrote about the Baltimore Sun’s writing from that era.

This game was definitely a two-horse race between Ryan and Wyatt, with Wyatt finding the first Daily Double on clue #7. While Wyatt did get it correct, he didn’t go all-in—which I’d consider to be a mistake when playing a 15-day champion. Wyatt held the lead after 15, while Ryan led after Single Jeopardy; Lucia got in on the signalling just once over the first 30 clues.
Double Jeopardy! Round categories: This Will Go Down in History; A Bit of Lit; “M” Paths; Calling for a Measurement; Super-Duper Supers; Words with Fiends
Much like Single, Ryan picked up 13 correct in Double Jeopardy, including $3,000 on the game’s second Daily Double. Wyatt found the last Daily Double late, but only bet $3,000—still, not nearly aggressive enough for when there’s a residency at the champion’s lectern. The fact that Wyatt missed the Daily Double turned the game into a runaway for Ryan—which Ryan cemented over the final six clues. Scores going into Final were $19,200 for Ryan to $8,800 for Wyatt and $4,200 for Lucia. Not quite a drubbing, but an excellent performance (Yes, this is a reference to the game’s opening clue.)
Both Ryan and Wyatt got Final correct, which means that Ryan has run the table for the third consecutive week. He’ll be back in an attempt to win game #17 on Monday!
