Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber musical began its life as a 1980 song cycle at the Sydmonton Festival, known as Practical Cats. By the time the West End debut came around the next year, it dropped the Practical in the title. It’s the fourth-longest running Broadway musical and the sixth-longest running West End Musical. Interestingly, Judi Dench was originally cast in the dual role of Grizabella and Jennyanydots in the original West End cast, but an Achilles tendon injury took her out. Dench ended up playing Old Deuteronomy in the 2019 film.
