Much like the beginning of Season 38, the beginning of Season 39 of Jeopardy! has a very strong champion at the champion’s lectern. Instead of Matt Amodio, though, our champion is Luigi de Guzman. Luigi has been averaging 49.6 buzzer attempts per game over his first five games (last season’s average was 33.) With that sort of consistency—even Amy Schneider was only averaging 45.5 attempts per game at the end of her run—Luigi is going to be an incredibly difficult player to defeat. Luigi has made some games close, though, due to missing Daily Doubles or his opponents getting the hang of the signaling device—remember, if you don’t have a runaway, you’re always in jeopardy of losing on the game’s final clue!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is “A Whole New World”?

“A Whole New World”, sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, was from the early-’90s Disney animated smash hit Aladdin, and went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week in March 1993. Interestingly, “All for Love” from The Three Musketeers went to #1 in 1994; of course, The Three Musketeers was live-action, and definitely not animated.

It was Emmett who got off to an absolute rocket start in today’s Jeopardy! round, but he made a very conservative Daily Double bet, leaving $2,600 on the table, only betting $1,000 of his $3,600. He did have a big lead after the Jeopardy! round.

Scores going into clue #61 were Luigi at $18,000, Emmett at $15,800, and Melissa at $2,800!

He’ll be back on Monday to defend!
