Regis Philbin also appeared on Celebrity Jeopardy! in 1992 (in fact, he was a contestant in the first-ever celebrity game, alongside Carol Burnett and Donna Mills), 1998, and 2006, finally winning in 2006.

Tournament of Champions projections:
With a projected 145 regular-play games to go prior to the Tournament of Champions cutoff, after 500,000 simulations, our model shows:
An average of 4.402 5+-time champions (standard deviation 1.7227).
An average of 7.8857 4+-time champions (standard deviation 2.0987).

An early cutoff took place 25.371% of the time (or a 5-game winner will be left out).

John Presloid qualified 51.475% of the time.
Anneke Garcia qualified 47.958% of the time.
Dave Leffler qualified 23.792% of the time.
Jonathan Dinerstein qualified 6.738% of the time.
Alex Schmidt qualified 1.430% of the time.
Jackie Fuchs qualified 0.143% of the time.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • John is the first player since Austin Rogers to have back-to-back games over 10K after J! round. The most recent person to do it 3 straight games? Mehrun Etebari in 2007.
  • After David’s perfect French on the Charlie Hebdo clue, it’s not surprising that he went 3/5 in the FROM THE FRENCH category!
  • Was it just me, or was Alex’s giving the correct response in Final Jeopardy! spliced in? It seemed that way. My guess is that he either forgot to give the correct response or he gave the wrong title of the syndicated talk show. (It did change a bunch while Regis was hosting Millionaire.)
  • It seemed like Megan was really trying to slow down the tempo of the game, but she just didn’t get control of the board enough to do it. It’s not often that you see such a contrast like the one between her and John.
  • John has put up quite a performance after $7,400 going into Final Jeopardy! in his first game. There are going to be outlier results when you have hundreds (or thousands) of trials. That being said, performances like this do cause me to take a look at the performance of the model as it stands, to see if it requires an adjustment.
