Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1970s Movies) for Thursday, July 19, 2018 (Season 34, Episode 224):
Earning its director the first of many Oscar nominations, this 1977 film had the working title “Watch the Skies”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Michelle Mueckler, a stay-at-home mom from Elgin, South Carolina
Justin Moody, a paralegal from Durham, North Carolina
Ryan Fenster, a student from SeaTac, Washington (6-day total: $127,397)
Ryan is quite high on our ToC Tracker; see where Ryan finds himself on the list here!
Ryan was brought back on Tuesday because the judges reversed themselves on a ruling of “schism” vs. “Great Schism” in the February 2 game. Others who have won an interrputed five games (having won at least once, then coming back, and winning again) include Bob Mesko in 2006 and Tom Nichols in 1994.
On the most recent episode of #JeopardyLivePanel, I interviewed Ali Hasan! Check out the interview here (or on Apple Podcasts!).
Correct response: What is Close Encounters of the Third Kind?

More information about Final Jeopardy:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind resulted in Steven Spielberg receiving the first of his seven Best Director Oscar nominations; the film is a story of Indianan Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss), and how his life changes following an encounter with a UFO.
One pitfall for contestants here, and for those of you playing along at home: While the rules of the show provide for the addition, removal, or change of leading articles at the start of titles, internal articles (such as the one in the title of this film) are not allowed to be changed. So, if you said “What is Close Encounters of a Third Kind” at home, you shouldn’t give yourself credit for a correct response.
