Supergroup Crosby, Stills, and Nash have been together since the late 1960s; Crosby had been dismissed from the Byrds and Stills’ Buffalo Springfield had broken up. Graham Nash quit the Hollies to join the group. With Neil Young (and billed as Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young), they played the first Woodstock festival — as their second-ever live performance. Joni Mitchell wrote a song (titled “Woodstock”) about the festival (even though she wasn’t there, as her agent felt it was better for her to appear on The Dick Cavett Show), and the CSNY version become one of the group’s first hits.
When they played Woodstock ’94 25 years later, Crosby, Stills, and Nash closed their set with a rendition of “Woodstock”.
