More information about Final Jeopardy:
Orson Welles became the first person to receive nominations for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Writing for his classic 1941 film Citizen Kane. It received 9 nominations, including Best Picture, at the Academy Awards it was eligible for, but it only won one (Best Writing, Original Screenplay), in spite of many expecting it to win many more. Variety magazine, in a 1942 article, said “there is no dissent to the prevailing opinion that the extra vote scuttled him. It was patent that the mob didn’t like the guy personally and took it out on him at the polls”. (“Extra” referring to “screen extras”, who were eligible to vote in many categories.) The extras voted en masse for Alex Trebek’s personal favorite film How Green Was My Valley, which won that year’s Best Picture.
I think the big negbait on this clue is Charlie Chaplin; his 1940 film The Great Dictator received nominations for Best Actor, Best Writing, and Best Picture, but not Best Director.
