Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Words of the Year) for Monday, April 11, 2022 (Season 38, Game 151):
Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2021 was this 3-letter one, short for a word that goes back to the Latin for “cow”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Michael Wolman, a marketing manager from Austin, Texas
Vanessa McCombs, a college instructor from Manassas, Virginia
Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (4-day total: $104,600)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Canada’s Mattea Roach—who now lives in Toronto but has previously lived in Halifax, Calgary, and Moncton as well—is at four victories and became the winningest Canadian Jeopardy! contestant (in regular play) in the history of the show on Friday, becoming the first Canadian to crack the $100,000 mark (in US dollars) in regular play on the show. She returns as a 4-day champion, hoping to make it to 5. (If she gets there, no Canadian has ever won six.)
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

According to Oxford’s corpus, by September 2021 the frequency of the word “vax” (short for “vaccine”) was 72 times greater than it was in 2020. The word “vaccine” itself comes from the Latin for cow; the first vaccine was for smallpox, developed by Edward Jenner, after he discovered that milkmaids (who had contracted mild cowpox due to their vocation) became immune from smallpox. For over 200 years since, vaccines have proven to be a safe and effective method of helping to provide immunity to various infectious diseases, reducing the overall effect of those diseases on society.

Game Recap:
Jeopardy! Round categories: A European Capital Tour; Purple Reign; It’s a Fact; In Mom’s Free Time; 2-Word Animal Expressions; Symphon”E”s
The opening 15 clues today belonged to the two Ms, with both Mattea and Michael getting off to strong start. Unfortunately, Michael was afraid to potentially go in the red, and left $600 on the table on the opening Daily Double. Coming out of the break, Mattea picked up nine correct responses (to Michael’s 7) and jumped out into a small lead.
Double Jeopardy! Round categories: U.S. Geographical History; The Origin Trail; Chemical Elements; Metaphors; Literature; Double Presidential Namers
Mattea struggled in the back half of Double Jeopardy as her two opponents got to play Daily Doubles. Unfortunately for Vanessa, she missed a Daily Double. Michael, however, picked up his for $5,000! In a round that felt like it got strangely cut off five clues early, your scores going into Final saw Michael at $12,600, with Mattea second at $10,200 and Vanessa third at $2,600.
In Final Jeopardy! today, Mattea was the only contestant to come up with “vax”—and she’s now a five-day champion! Tomorrow, she tries to become the first Canadian to ever win six!

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
(Scores: Michael $12,600 Mattea $10,200 Vanessa $2,600)
Mattea: You should bet between $4,801 (double the score difference between you and Michael) and $4,999 (ensuring you stay ahead of Vanessa).
Vanessa: You can still win this, but Mattea has to overbet and you need a single-get Final. You need to get to at least $4,800, though, so your minimum bet needs to be $2,200.
Michael: Standard cover bet today is $7,801.
