Marko Saric returns in today’s episode as a 2-day champion. However, much like last week, the mid-week ending of the Jeopardy Invitational Tournament means that today’s game is not the first of a new tape day—this game would have been taped a few minutes after Friday’s. Today’s challengers are Nam Nguyen and Elly Trickett.

There are a couple of things I’d like to mention: firstly, it is my personal belief as a Canadian Jeopardy! fan that, while the show has gone back and forth over the years to explicitly mention Canada in contestant introductions, it makes me feel prouder as a Canadian Jeopardy! fan to hear Johnny Gilbert actually say Canada. I would be incredibly disappointed if that went away. Secondly, I am expecting to see Nam have a strong game in this one; he did a significant amount of in-person simulator preparation leading up to this appearance—a number of Toronto-area trivia luminaries were invited to assist in preparation, and quite a few took him up on it!

For a viewer at home or player in-studio, good trivia topics usually fall into three categories: things you know, things you should know, and things you once knew but have forgotten about and are disappointed that you’ve now forgotten. Today’s Final Jeopardy falls squarely into “things you should know”.

Part of the famed Harlem Renaissance, Zora Neale Hurston’s works include her best-known novel today, Their Eyes Were Watching God, as well as Fast and Furious, a revue that played at the New Yorker Theatre in September 1931; both Hurston and Mabley were among the collaborators.

Hurston’s works had been largely ignored by the American literary “establishment”, though, until Alice Walker’s 1970s essay “In Search of Zora Neale Hurston”, published in Ms. magazine and later renamed “Looking for Zora”; the essay was about Walker’s search for Hurston’s then-unmarked grave, in a quest to mark it. Walker’s essay led to a rediscovery of Hurston’s works; collections of Hurston’s essays, including “You Don’t Know Us Negroes”, were still being published in 2022.

Hurston’s writing about the African-American experience in the early-to-mid-20^th century is important for understanding current race relations in the United States; hence why I described this clue as “something you should know,” regardless of what the at-home or in-studio get rate is.
