Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Kelly has played two very strong games, but was very fortunate to escape with victory on Friday, after his nearest opponent failed to bet enough in Final Jeopardy! to take advantage of Kelly’s missing the clue. It’s a new week, though, and it’s never easy to reclaim a previous week’s momentum.

When consulting the Oracle, Byzas was told to find “the land opposite the city of the blind” in searching for a place to set up a colony for the city-state of Megara (near Athens). When he arrived at the current location of Istanbul, where the Sea of Marmara meats the Bosporus, he found the colony of Chalcedon on one shore, and then realized that Chalcedon was “blind” for not taking advantage of what was seen even at that time as the more advantageous half—what is now seen as the European side of the city. The new city was named Byzantion (Byzantium); it was renamed to Constantinople in 330 and Istanbul in 1930.

- That was a classic RTQ error (Read the Question) for Nick in Final Jeopardy; a mistake commonplace in trivia. It’s obvious that he didn’t pay enough attention to “what’s now known as”.
