Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Canadian Medicine) for Monday, February 19, 2024 (Season 40, Game 116):

Nova Scotian William Knapp Buckley devised a widely used antitussive, meaning a drug used against this

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The Montreal representation continues today as we reach the final week of Champions Wildcard—the Tournament of Champions begins on Friday! This semifinal features Diandra D’Alessio, Deb Bilodeau, and Taylor Clagett. I’m very interested in seeing how far Deb progresses, if at all, if only to prove that there is good reason to study Final Jeopardy strategy!

Correct response: What is coughing?

This is just a reminder: game material is selected randomly and independently of contestants—that is the overall fairest way of handling that situation.

As any Canadian will tell you, “It tastes awful. And it works”. That’s how Buckley’s cough syrup has been marketed since the 1980s, with Frank Buckley, the adopted son of William Knapp Buckley, as its pitchman.

The active ingredients in Buckley’s Original Mixture are ammonium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, menthol, and camphor.

I think the best way for most viewers to get this Final is to focus on the fact that “antitussive”, realize it sounds a lot like Robitussin, and realize that Robitussin is a cough medicine. In fact, I don’t even think that the Canadian angle to the clue will provide any sort of advantage or disadvantage here to Montrealer Diandra.

In order to redesign our merchandise area to serve you better in 2026, all merchandise sales have been temporarily taken offline. Look for a return in late 2026! All previous orders will still be supported.
