Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: After winning three times last week, Christine Whelchel returns this week as a 3-day champion, which puts her onto our Tournament of Champions Tracker here at The Jeopardy! Fan. The way the field is shaping up, with very few spots left in the field and 110 episodes still to go this season, it’s looking like Christine may need two victories to cement her spot in the next Tournament of Champions. Starting out the week as challengers: Joe Choo and Ellen Pratt, as Ken Jennings stays hosting this week’s games.

One important note, for those viewers who aren’t aware of this: Jeopardy! is taped in advance, usually about 6-8 weeks in advance of the episode date. The show would have no way of knowing that Vladimir Putin was going to begin invading Ukraine last Wednesday evening. Today’s episode was taped on January 11.
Shortly after Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia early in 1992, a group of Serbians located in Bosnia, aiming to create a Bosnian Serb state, began a siege of the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo, in April 1992. The siege lasted until the end of February, 1996, a total of 1,425 days. (The siege ended on Leap Day in 1996). Four the commanders of the siege were convicted of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the years following and imprisoned.

Jeopardy! Round categories: American History, Sports By Their Honors, Small Adjectives, 2-Word Book Titles, Kickin’ It, Old School
Christine got out to a fast start, including finding the Daily Double on the 2nd clue. By the opening break, though, Ellen got back close to the lead, buoyed by going 3/5 in the sports category.
Coming out of the break, a major turning point was a clue about McGill University in the OLD SCHOOL category—Ellen got it incorrect and Christine picked up the rebound for a major swing, leading to Christine holding a commanding lead after Single Jeopardy. (Yes, I’m trying to normalize this term.)

Ellen went a little bit conservative on her Daily Double betting, only going clue value on the first one. Christine, however, went hunting and found the final one, going slightly more aggressive for $3,000, but getting her poets mixed up, and falling back slightly. The final 19 clues saw a number of incorrect responses, with the three players combining for 9 in total over the entire round.
Moving on to Final, Christine was the only one to get Final correct today, which makes her the first 4-time champion since Amy Schneider. Will her total be enough for the Tournament of Champions if she doesn’t win tomorrow? Only time will tell.

- Along the premise of “if I thought this, I’m sure someone else likely will too”, I originally read the HOMOPHONES TO THE LETTER $1600 clue as “4-letter palindromic female flock member” and not the actual clue, “4-legged palindromic female flock member”, and I was very confused.

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
Ellen: You need to bet at least $2,600, but you might as well bet all $7,000, as you can’t be passed from behind.
Christine: Just in case Ellen doesn’t bet $2,600 (which happens often enough to take into account), bet $2,201. You could go up to $4,799 if you really like the category, but I don’t really recommend it at this point.
