Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Countries of Africa) for Monday, March 20, 2023 (Season 39, Game 136):

At one time a province of the Roman Empire, this kingdom is known to Arabic scholars as Al-Maghrib Al-Aqsa, “the far west”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Jake Garrett, a football coach & teacher from Trussville, Alabama

Jake Garrett on Jeopardy!

Melissa Klapper, a professor from Merion Station, Pennsylvania

Melissa Klapper on Jeopardy!

Kelly Barry, a marketing communications specialist from Seattle, Washington (1-day total: $14,600)

Kelly Barry on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

On Friday’s episode, Seattle’s Kelly Barry defeated 8-day champion Stephen Webb; she returns today to defend for the first time. Her challengers today are Melissa Klapper and Jake Garrett.

One thing that I’ve noticed that isn’t readily apparent to many Jeopardy! viewers: if you keep constantly having to use your brain extensively over the course of a day, your brain gets tired and doesn’t operate as optimally as it would have at the beginning. This happens with quiz bowlers after a long day, this happens with chess players after a long day, and this happens with Scrabble players after a long day. This also happened with Stephen at the end of a long taping day on Friday’s episode (it was his sixth taping of the day)—and it’s not something that is apparent to someone at home unless someone at home has also experienced this same phenomenon during their own life.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

When the Arabs first settled the Moroccan area in the 7th century CE, the area was believed to be the westernmost location in the world; hence the name “Al-Maghrib”—Far West. During Roman times (between 300 BCE and 430 CE), it was known as Mauretania.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: State Of The Airport; Gifts For The Sports Fan?; Quite The Fish Story; “Me”; Myself; & Eye)

The opening round saw all three players play very well; Kelly went all-in on an early Daily Double to jump into the lead, but Jake, then Melissa found the timing of the signalling device to both pass our returning champion by the end of 30.

Jake 6 correct 1 incorrect
Kelly 5 correct 0 incorrect
Melissa 3 correct 1 incorrect

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

The Daily Doubles stayed hidden until very late in the round—clues 26 and 30, respectively! Melissa found both of them, but unfortunately failed to wager enough on the last one to cement a runaway! (Ken even pointed it out during Final.) Instead, Jake was still in with a faint hope going into the 61st clue; scores going into Final were Melissa at $24,400, Jake at $12,400, and Kelly at $8,200.

Jake 21 correct 3 incorrect
Kelly 12 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 16 (0 today).

Final today was a triple-get; Melissa is your new champion! She’ll be back tomorrow to defend.
