Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Music & Literature) for Monday, November 6, 2023 (Season 40, Game 41):
John Steinbeck called this “one of the great songs of the world” & wanted the music & lyrics printed in one of his novels
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Brian Adams, a retired public educator from Big Bear Lake, California
Jilana Cotter, a senior data analyst from Dade City, Florida
Dave Pai, a field application scientist originally from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Our third semifinal for Champions Wildcard Diamonds is between Dave Pai, Jilana Cotter, and Brian Adams. One will join Emily Sands and Aaron Craig in the final. I do think that either Dave or Jilana are probably most likely to win this one—Brian’s quarterfinal win seemed to be a bit of a surprise to him, while Dave and Jilana had much stronger performances in their respective opening games.

On a more personal note, I’ll be a part of the Gamers vs. MS charity live-stream relay on Twitch once again. My time in the relay will be from 2 AM to 8 AM Eastern Standard Time tomorrow, November 7, on my own Twitch channel, twitch.tv/thejeopardyfan/. Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, with an estimated 90,000 Canadians living with the disease. On average, 12 Canadians are diagnosed with MS every day. Most people are diagnosed with MS between the ages of 20 and 49, and the unpredictable effects of the disease will last for the rest of their lives. MS is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Since that includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve, MS can affect vision, memory, balance and mobility. If you’d like to donate before, during, or after the charity stream, any amounts would be greatly appreciated—you can donate here!
Correct response: What is “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The title of John Steinbeck’s famed work The Grapes of Wrath was inspired by a line in Julia Ward Howe’s 1861 song “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” (set to the music of “John Brown’s Body”): “Mine eyes have seen the glory / Of the coming of the Lord; / He is trampling out the vintage / Where the grapes of wrath are stored”. In a note to his editor, Steinbeck wrote, “This is one of the great songs of the world, and as you read the book you will realize that the words have a special meaning in the book. And I should like the music to be put there in case anyone, any one forgets”.
