Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Authors) for Monday, October 24, 2022 (Season 39, Game 31):

When Esquire began as a men’s lifestyle magazine in the 1930s, he was asked for manly content and wrote in 28 of the first 33 issues

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Sadie Goldberger, an interpreter from Columbia, Maryland

Sadie Goldberg

Sadie’s previous game: Friday, June 17, 2022

Jeff Smith, a music educator from San Diego, California

Jeff Smith on Jeopardy!

Jeff’s previous game: Friday, November 5, 2021

Sarah Snider, a middle school humanities teacher from Fishers, Indiana

Sarah Snider on Jeopardy!

Sarah’s previous game: Thursday, May 5, 2022

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Welcome to Week 2 of Jeopardy! Second Chance (presented by Moderna)! Nine more players are getting a second chance to become a Jeopardy! champion and one of the nine will join last week’s winner, Jessica Stephens, in the next Tournament of Champions!

Today’s game features Sarah Snider, Jeff Smith, and Sadie Goldberger. Sadie’s the sentimental favorite this week after she ran out of time to complete her response in Final Jeopardy. Sarah came incredibly close to ending Mattea Roach’s streak. However, I would say that Jeff is one of the favorites stat-wise to take the whole week — especially if we get some regression to the mean in terms of Daily Doubles. But, as we saw last week, absolutely anything can happen!

On a more personal note, it is the time of year for the twice-yearly Gamers vs. MS 168-hour online fundraiser! 24 different Twitch streamers will be live between 8 AM Eastern on October 22 and 8 AM Eastern on October 29, raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Canada has one of the world’s highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS), with an estimated 1 in every 385 Canadians living with the disease. I’ll be streaming live on my Twitch channel, twitch.tv/thejeopardyfan/ from 2 AM Eastern–8 AM Eastern on October 25! You can find more information about this fall’s relay at gamersvsms.ca.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: I Played A Real Person; Children’s Literature; Double Double Letters; Cereal Mascots; Captain; Crunch)

Sarah had a torrid start to today’s game, picking up 5 clues near the bottom of the board to start. Jeff continued with his struggles on Daily Doubles, missing another just before the opening break. He recovered very well in the back half of the round, though, and it was a very closely-contested three-way match going into Double Jeopardy!

Statistics at the first break (14 clues):

Sarah 5 correct 0 incorrect
Sadie 3 correct 0 incorrect
Jeff 3 correct 2 incorrect

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Sarah 9 correct 1 incorrect
Sadie 9 correct 0 incorrect
Jeff 8 correct 2 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Destination Europe; Say What?; Math Class; News Makers & Writers ’22; Plantcraft; “C” Band Lyrics)

Sarah’s buzzer mojo almost completely went away in Double Jeopardy, as both Jeff and Sadie were very strong. It was Sadie who found both Daily Doubles, splitting them with conservative bets. Jeff clawed back more of his deficit late, so things were relatively close going into Final today! The scores going into the Final were Sadie at $13,400, Jeff at $10,600 and Sarah at $5,200.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Sadie 21 correct 3 incorrect
Jeff 18 correct 4 incorrect
Sarah 12 correct 4 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 8 (0 today).

Sadie got her redemption — all three players were correct in Final today, even though she still went for the full name. (Even Ken pointed it out.) Sadie moves on to Thursday’s and Friday’s game!

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I’m quite glad to see Sadie get redemption after the circumstances of her initial defeat.
  • Today’s box score: October 24, 2022 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Sadie $13,400 Jeff $10,600 Sarah $5,200)

Sarah: You have to bet at least $400 to pass Sadie’s total if she bets to cover Jeff. (Actual bet: $5,198)

Jeff: Sadie talked about being coached on betting strategy; she’s going to bet to cover. You might as well bet to keep Sarah locked out; limit your bet to $199. (Actual bet: $2,801)

Sadie: Standard cover bet over Jeff is $7,801. (Actual bet: $7,801)
