The good news is that first-run episodes of Jeopardy! resume today after six weeks of encore presentations. The bad news—though this is only bad news if you watch Jeopardy! on an ABC station that normally airs the show at 7:30 or later—is that you’re going to need to check your local listings to find out when the show is airing, due to the NFL (as always) moving onto network television for the Monday of Week 1. I’d be more upset about this, but the National Football League behemoth is pretty much why the vast majority of local television stations giving us linear television can still exist at this point, giving us mostly undisturbed Jeopardy! throughout the year.
Matt Carberry over on Twitter/X has a thread detailing where things are moving: preempted entirely in Miami, Chattanooga, Bangor, and Binghamton, moving to 7:00 in Columbia (SC) and to the FOX affiliate in Albany, to late night in most other ET spots (including Washington), and to mid-evening in most of the West Coast.

And if you’re wondering where Lucas is—chances are you won’t see him for a while. Due to the WGA strike, regular play and the originally scheduled postseason play have been postponed until the strike’s resolution. In its stead, and in order to keep production running, the show elected to play a Second Chance competition, followed by a new “Champions Wildcard” competition. These shows will feature Season 37 players for Second Chance and Season 37 & 38 champions for Champions Wildcard.
Editorially, I believed these contestants were “Called” unexpectedly to make it less likely that these players would stumble upon potentially reused clues that the show said would be used during the WGA strike. Interestingly, when it comes to today’s game, I have seen category titles that were used in the mid-2010s, but we have to wait until the episode airs to see what material has been seen on the show before.
Moving on to today’s actual game, our returning contestants are Jill Tucker, Gabriel Ostler, and Derek Allen. (You can click through to their original games above.) One interesting point was already brought up on Reddit when the mini-site was unveiled on the official Jeopardy! website: Gabriel was introduced as a script writer—which will undoubtedly see comments tonight on the Internet, considering the WGA is still on strike. For what it’s worth, I believe that Gabriel writes news scripts for an NBC affiliate in his area and does not write screenplays/television episodes.
One more change is to the consolation prizes: they have been increased to $3,000 for second and $2,000 for third (from the previous $2,000 and $1,000).

Interestingly, a similar Final Jeopardy! aired during the semifinals of the 2006 Tournament of Champions: “The last British monarch who was not the child of a monarch”.

Jill doesn’t win that extra money—there was absolutely no upside whatsoever to the bet that she made in Final Jeopardy. If you are a prospective contestant watching this at home, do not do what she did today.
- I was disappointed not to see any cosmetic changes to the show; I was hoping that we might see something like categories on the clue screen, or a return to seeing clue text with video clues.
