Welcome to Week 2 of Season 39 of Jeopardy! Emmett Stanton ended the run of 5-day champion Luigi de Guzman on Friday and returns today to defend his title against Jason Freeman and Suzanne Goss! It will also be a good week of Jeopardy! with the week ending on Sunday with the premiere of Celebrity Jeopardy; Sunday’s match features Andy Richter, Ego Nwodim, and Simu Liu.

Correct response: What is the Emancipation Proclamation?

On September 22, 1862, Abraham Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, freeing “all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States” still in rebellion on January 1, 1863. Giving the warning was seen as a ploy to end the rebellion against the United States being undertaken by the Confederacy. In his comments quoted above, Massachusetts Governor John Andrew felt that Lincoln might have erred in giving the warning (instead of simply granting freedom immediately); social media—and its inability to convey nuance—would have certainly struggled with this. However, the final Proclamation—issued January 1, 1863—was universally seen as good.

Let’s just hope everyone spells the correct response correctly today.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• As the show has said dozens of times now, the judges can view the contestants’ pens as they write their responses. They clearly saw Emmett write the letters of the correct response—how it looks at the end generally doesn’t factor into the judging. The judges’ call was thus correct. Further comments regarding his handwriting and this specific ruling are out of order and will be removed.
• That being said, any issues at this point are 100% the show’s own doing. Just give the contestants a keyboard—we know the technology is there, they used it for Eddie Timanus—and we completely eliminate any and all debates that come up all-too-regularly in 2022 regarding handwriting.
• On the final Daily Double, Emmett either needed to bet for the runaway or bet to keep his lead. A “middle-range” bet is very ill-advised here.
