Correct response: Who is Evangelista Torricelli?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

One of Galileo’s students (who later spent time as Galileo’s secretary), Evangelista Torricelli is best known today as the inventor of the barometer. The quote “We live submerged at the bottom of an ocean of air” came from Torricelli’s describing of a mercury barometer to measure air pressure; an inverted glass tube is placed in a bath of mercury, air is prevented from coming in the top, and the amount mercury pushed into the tube is measured.

Due to mercury’s poisonous qualities, most barometers today are of the “aneroid” type, which contains a small airtight container (where air pressure affects the container’s sides).

I suspect that this is going to be a difficult clue for many viewers; the only time contestants were asked to go from “invented the barometer” to “Torricelli” (instead of Torricelli to barometer) was in the Battle of the Decades, in a $2,000 clue.

I also have a feeling that today’s game will be pre-empted in many daytime markets because of network news coverage of impeachment hearings. Check local listings.

Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well! All proceeds from any “Keep The Faith And We’ll Win” shirt sold will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. To date, over $440 has been raised.)

In order to redesign our merchandise area to serve you better in 2026, all merchandise sales have been temporarily taken offline. Look for a return in late 2026! All previous orders will still be supported.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Obviously it worked out for Lindsey to make the choice not to cover Gilbert in this situation (thinking Gilbert would bet small).
  • Because of Francois’ score of $34,801, Francois will have the champion’s podium for both halves of the final.
  • In case anyone was wondering, WXVT in Mississippi switched away from network coverage to air the game.
