Tchaikovsky’s “The Year 1812”, best known as the “1812 Overture”, is a well-known composition to commemorate Russia’s defence against Napoleon in the year 1812. It’s best known for the varied percussion section in its scoring, which includes actual cannon fire in its closing moments. Napoleon’s Grande Armée, while it reached Moscow after the Battle of Borodino, ultimately could not handle the incredible cold Russian winter that year, and was reduced to one-tenth of its previous size by the time it retreated to safety in Poland.
