Vaccines work. Smallpox (Variola major) had ravaged the planet for thousands of years. But then, in 1798, Edward Jenner showed that introducing cowpox to the human immune system (a much weaker pox) could dramatically curtail smallpox. But it still took almost two centuries due to resistence to vaccines. The Supreme Court, in 1905, ruled on a challenge to a Cambridge, MA law in 1902 requiring that all residents be vaccinated against smallpox, with John Marshall Harlan writing It was the duty of the constituted authorities primarily to keep in view the welfare, comfort and safety of the many, and not permit the interests of the many to be subordinated to the wishes or convenience of the few.” So, aided by immunization laws worldwide, the last reported naturally occuring case occurred in 1977.
