Jules Verne’s famous novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea: A Tour of the Underwater World, first serialized in March 1869 through June 1870 in the Magasin d’Éducation et de Récréation, featured Captain Nemo (Latin for “no one”) piloting the Nautilus (Greek for “sailor”). The book’s title refers to the distance traveled while in the Nautilus, not the depths to which the ship travelled, as 20,000 leagues (using the French metric league definition of 4 kilometers, not 3 nautical miles) would be six times the diameter of the Earth.
