Good morning! Today is Thursday, April 1, 2021. April Fool’s Day. You never know what the show is going to have up its sleeve. Anyway, here’s today’s Final Jeopardy:

Antidisestablishmentarianism: A real-life antidisestablishmentarian, William Bridgeman opposed the 1920 disestablishment of this in Wales

(correct response beneath the contestants)

The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.

Today’s contestants:

Scott Shewfelt, a writer originally from Tavistock, Ontario, Canada

Scott Shewfelt on Jeopardy!

KT Lowe, a librarian from St. Clair Shores, Michigan

KT Lowe on Jeopardy!

Emily Seaman, a law clerk from Houston, Texas (1-day total: $8,400)

Emily Seaman on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Emily won last night with an excellent wager in Final Jeopardy, continuing the hex that has somehow been placed on the set preventing us from having a three-day champion. A little bit of improvement on last night’s stats (Emily was only in first on 28% of clues yesterday) would go a long way to helping defend her title. But, if this Final Jeopardy! clues trips people up, Emily has demonstrated a strategic knowledge that will help her chances.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is (the) Church (of England)?

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Antidisestablishmentarianism is the believe that a church (most specifically, the Anglican church) should continue to receive state sanctioning (as opposed to those who believe that church and state should be separated). In this specific case, the 1914 Welsh Church Act was enacted in response to those who objected to Wales having a state-sponsored church that paid money to the Church of England. In the aftermath of this, the Church of Wales was permitted to keep its property, but no longer received tithe money from the government.

As a disclaimer: “the Church of England” feels like the most correct response to me; it would not surprise me if alternatives were accepted by the judges here.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Dr. Oz did just say “church”; so, if you just said “church” at home, give yourself credit!
  • The show has always considered “true daily double” to be immediately converted to the equivalent dollar value at the time of utterance; later scoring changes do not alter that number. You as a viewer may not agree with this, and it’s certainly not mathematically perfect, but those are the rules that the show chooses to play under (and today’s refund which took place after an intervening Daily Double is certainly an extreme edge case to normal policy).
  • Thus far, $236,100 has been donated to Healthcorps, Inc.
