Today’s Encore Presentation is quarterfinal #4 from the 2024 Jeopardy Invitational Tournament; this one was between Celeste DiNucci, Austin Rogers, and Amy Schneider. Until I’d read my recap again, I had completely forgotten just how dominant Amy was in this game–and, in hindsight, it absolutely explains why she received the producer’s pick to Jeopardy! Masters. Amy is 100% one of the absolute top Jeopardy! players right now and she showed why in this game here.

Correct response: Who is Al Capone?

According to an August 12, 1996 article in the New York Daily News, Al Capone’s famed scar (the one that gave him the nickname “Scarface”) was given to him at the age of 17 by Frank Galluccio; Capone was working security at a place called the Harvard Inn when he was knifed by “Little Frankie”. Later, according to the same article, Capone would claim he was scarred by shrapnel while fighting with the Lost Battalion in 1918.

This is one of those clues that makes you go “Oh, of course!” as soon as you realize what the correct response is. All three of these players are strong enough in order to get there.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• In hindsight, I find it absolutely incredible that people were full-throatedly upset that Amy Schneider received an invitation to Jeopardy! Masters after Amy picked up correct responses on 13 consecutive clues against a ToC winner and one of the most dominant regular-play winners of the 2010s.

• Explaining Austin’s Final Jeopardy response further: “well only” means that the free shots being provided would not be the “top-shelf” liquors that a bar might carry, instead being the lower-shelf general liquor that is used when a customer just asks for “vodka”/”gin”/”whiskey”/etc.; the alternate term would be a “call” drink, when the customer actually specifies a specific brand of alcohol.
