Happy Thursday! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Words in American History) for Thursday, January 20, 2022 (Season 38, Game 94):
The 1890 Census reported that “the unsettled area has been so broken into…that there can hardly be said to be a” this
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Brittany Love, a trial attorney from Concord, North Carolina
Patrick Lackey, a biochemistry professor from New Wilmington, Pennsylvania
Amy Schneider, an engineering manager from Oakland, California (36-day total: $1,181,800)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Yesterday, Amy won her 36th game, moving to 2 wins behind Matt Amodio for 2nd all-time. How long will this streak last? We’re at the point of the streak where the unlucky result could come any day. Looking into the historical record, though, of the 11 previous players to have won 10 or more games, 4 of them have lost on a Monday (Matt Amodio, James Holzhauer, Julia Collins, and David Madden), 2 on Tuesday (Ken Jennings and Jonathan Fisher), 3 on Wednesday (Matt Jackson, Seth Wilson, and Arthur Chu), and 2 on Thursday (Jason Zuffranieri and Austin Rogers). No 10+ game winner has ever lost on a Friday.
Today is the fourth day of the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes. Winners will discover iconic, wild Alaska on an expedition aboard one of Lindblad’s 100-guest sister ships, National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture, accompanied by a team of naturalists, certified photo instructors, an undersea specialist and a wellness instructor.
To enter the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes, viewers are invited to tune-in to JEOPARDY! every weekday and enter the daily Final Jeopardy! category (today’s is Words in American History) on the sweepstakes entry webpage, sweepstakes.jeopardy.com. Then, they will be entered for a chance to win an expedition for two exploring authentic Alaskan coastal wilderness from the unique vantage of a small ship. Each winner and their guest will receive round-trip coach-class air transportation from the winner’s closest major gateway airport, $1,000 US spending cash, as well as all shipboard accommodations, meals (excluding alcoholic beverages), and activities for travel valid in 2022 or 2023.
I would also like to remind the readers that the above information is provided in order to be helpful to readers. This is just a fan site; I have no way of troubleshooting any potential issues that may arise. One thing, though: you have to enter the category before 11:59 PM Pacific Time each day.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is a frontier?

In 1890, the Superintendent of the U.S. Census declared that there was no longer a frontier line, as the United States had so many pockets of settled areas that a frontier line was no longer said to exist, and that the United States had expanded to occupy from Atlantic to Pacific. The U.S. Census Bureau has a data visualization of population density from 1790 to 1890 at its website.

- $71,400 is the 25th-best single-game regular play total of all time, and the 5th-best not belonging to James Holzhauer.
- I don’t know where the show got 1,164 correct responses for Amy going into today’s show; both here and J! Archive has the total through yesterday at 1,160.
- $37,400 is the 9th-best Coryat score of all time on the show.
