Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Tech Talk) for Thursday, July 4, 2024 (Season 40, Game 214):

In 1992 Jean Polly told new Web users to do this & later explained they “need some skill…never know if there are going to be sharks”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Josh Martin on Jeopardy!

Christine Roberts, a digital marketing coordinator originally from Holland, Pennsylvania

Christine Roberts on Jeopardy!

Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, California (1-day total: $19,185)

Isaac Hirsch on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Isaac Hirsch enters this Fourth of July as a defending 1-day champion, picking up just shy of $20,000 in victory yesterday. Today, he faces off against Christine Roberts and Josh Martin.

“Today I’ll travel to Minnesota, Texas, California, Cleveland, New Zealand, Sweden and England. I’m not frantically packing, and I won’t pick up any frequent flyer mileage. In fact, I’m sipping cocoa at my Macintosh. My trips will be electronic, using the computer at my desk, communications software, a modem, and a standard phone line.” That is the opening paragraph of Jean Polly’s Surfing the Internet, her 1992 primer to the Internet.

For being a librarian who was one of the first to champion and extol the virtues of the Internet, and what was available there, Polly was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2019.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: History, American Style; Same Role In The Franchise; Words With Silent Consonants; Hit The Grid-Y; Game-Pourri; Play Time)

There was only one incorrect response in the first segment; unfortunately, it was a True Daily Double that Isaac attempted. After 15 clues, Josh led with $2,800 to Christine’s $2,000 and Isaac’s $800.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Josh 4 correct 0 incorrect
Christine 2 correct 0 incorrect
Isaac 7 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Josh flies his children for their birthday.
Christine is studying Basque.
Isaac was elected Homecoming King as a high school senior.

Isaac had a strong second half of the round, picking up another 7 correct to come within $800 of Josh’s lead.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Josh 8 correct 0 incorrect
Isaac 14 correct 2 incorrect
Christine 2 correct 0 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Josh $4,200
Isaac $3,400
Christine $2,000

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: See You In The Funny Papyrus; 3 E’s Only; Pacific Islands; Latin Music; Known By Their Initials; Well, We’ve Never Had That Response)

Isaac got to DD2 early, but gave Josh a brief opening—and Josh nearly doubled up through DD3. Thus, despite getting half of the responses correct, Josh is within two-thirds of Isaac going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Isaac 30 correct 4 incorrect
Josh 14 correct 0 incorrect
Christine 7 correct 0 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 20 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Isaac $21,200
Josh $14,400
Christine $6,400

Both Josh and Isaac were correct—with “surf the Web”, which is fine with me—and Isaac is a 2-day champion!

Tonight’s results:

Christine $6,400 – $2,000 = $4,400 (What thanks!)
Josh $14,400 + $799 = $15,199 (What is surf the web?)
Isaac $21,200 + $7,601 = $28,801 (What is surf the web?) (2-day total: $47,986)

Isaac Hirsch, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the July 4, 2024 game.)

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Isaac $21,200 Josh $14,400 Christine $6,400)

Isaac: Standard cover bet over Josh is $7,601. (Actual bet: $7,601)

Christine: Bet whatever you like; however, your chances of winning might be helped by a big bet, because Isaac doesn’t have that much of an overbet cushion. (Actual bet: $2,000)

Josh: Bet no more than $799 and you take victory if Isaac misses Final. (Actual bet: $799)
