Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Country Names) for Thursday, June 1, 2023 (Season 39, Game 189):

The first current country to include its particular religion in its full name, it also has that religion in the name of its capital

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Eva Thomas, an attorney from Brooklyn, New York

Eva Thomas on Jeopardy!

Jared Watson, a quality control specialist from Greenville, Texas

Jared Watson on Jeopardy!

Ilhana Redzovic, an investment associate from Chicago, Illinois (2-day total: $30,800)

Ilhana Redzovic on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Ilhana Redzovic won an up-and-down game on yesterday’s show with a shrewd $0 wager in Final on yesterday’s show that could end up playing to her advantage for the rest of the week; being that she didn’t make a cover bet in Final Jeopardy, you might see challengers choosing to play more aggressively in Final, now that they know there’s a chance that Ilhana might not make a cover bet a second time. Will that work out well for challengers Jared Watson and Eva Thomas?

Five current countries in the world contain “Islam” in their full official names: Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Islamic Republic of the Gambia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Islamic Republic of Mauritania, and Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Of these five countries, Pakistan became known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1956 (Mauritania, second in this list, became known as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in 1960). Islamabad, which means “city of Islam”, was a planned city that became capital of Pakistan in the late 1960s.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I disagree with the judges’ ruling to accept Jared’s pronunciation of “macaron”, as there is a different confection, “macaroon”, that a “macaron” could be confused with. However, it had zero effect on the outcome of the game, due to how Final Jeopardy! played out; thus, any discussion here is academic.

  • Today’s box score: June 1, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Eva $16,200 Jared $11,600 Ilhana $4,600)

Ilhana: Go all in; if Eva covers Jared and misses, she falls to $9,199. (Actual bet: $4,600)

Jared: Limit your bet to $2,399; this way, you stay ahead of Ilhana if she doubles. If you’re concerned that Eva might hold back a dollar because of the situation, go all in.(Actual bet: $2,400)

Eva: Standard cover bet over Jared is $7,001. (Though you do risk falling to $9,199 if you do that. If that really worries you, bet just $7,000.) (Actual bet: $5,599)
