The House Un-American Activities Committee (or the House Committee on Un-American Activities), was created to investigate those in the United States suspected to have fascist or communist ties. Created in 1938 (though there had been three previous committees investigative the same since 1918) and originally chaired by Martin Dies, Jr. from Texas, it became a standing committee in 1945. It’s most famous for the investigation of Hollywood in 1947, leading to the unfortunate blacklisting of many writers and directors. By the 1960s, it was generally lampooned by both political satirists and those who were subpoenaed by the committee, and the committee ceased to exist in January 1975.
