Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Mattea Roach has moved to 22 victories after her victory in yesterday’s game; she goes for win #23 today against T.J. Lovejoy and Sarah Snider! Meanwhile, Jeopardy’s website—on the Hall of Fame page—is currently incorrect. Mattea Roach is not 9th in all-time winnings (including tournaments); she is 11th. The show has failed to include Roger Craig’s $25,000 prize from the 2019 All-Star Games and Jason Zuffranieri’s $10,000 prize from the 2021 Tournament of Champions. Both are still ahead of Mattea on the all-time list. (The same holds for David Madden’s totals missing $10,000. I bet that the IRS cared about that money; the show should, too.)

Correct response: What is Citizen Kane?

In the classic 1941 movie Citizen Kane, Xanadu was the fictional estate of the title character, Charles Foster Kane. In the film, a newsreel designed to look like The March of Time newsreels from the era described the estate, located on the Gulf Coast in Florida. In addition to the splendor of the real-life ancient city of Xanadu that inspired its name, it was also said that Xanadu in the film was inspired by Hearst Castle (the estate of William Randolph Hearst, who was compared to Kane after the film’s release and who attempted to stop the film’s release, believing that the film was an unflattering portrait of him—even though Hearst hadn’t seen the film beforehand)
Meanwhile, this appears to be a continuation of the website issue saga from last month; this clue was on the website as the New York Times Clue of the Day on April 5; I assume that a website operator accidentally typoed a month in the data, with there being two April 5 clues (and only one running) on the website and none for May 5. I also assume that tomorrow will see the same issue, as a different clue appeared on the website on April 6.

The opening 15 clues belonged to Sarah, she picked up a Daily Double in amongst 6 correct responses to jump out to a lead! Sarah continued her strong play, finishing the round at $8,000, but Mattea did make a charge to sit second after Single Jeopardy!
Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Astronomy; Describing the Pulitzer Fiction Winner; Trust Fall; It’s TV Mother’s Day; Cross That Bridge; Come to “It”
This round was very even between Sarah and Mattea. However, the Daily Doubles split our players. Mattea lost $2,000 on hers, whereas Sarah only bet $5,000 on hers late in a situation that called for a very big (or a very small wager). The middling bet meant that Sarah didn’t have a runaway going into Final! Scores going into Final were Sarah leading at $22,600, with Mattea in a distant second at $13,000 and T.J. out of contention at -$3,600.
How did Final go? It proved crucial today! In another instance of the ZergCam (which I’m always happy to see), Mattea was the only player correct in Final! In a dramatic finale, Mattea survived a scare to win her 23rd! She’ll go for two dozen tomorrow!
