Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Dave Rapp won his second game yesterday after a performance that wasn’t quite as strong as his first one, at least in terms of buzzer attempts. He only had 36 (as opposed to 45 on Friday.) That being said, when he wanted to get in, he was usually able to do so, getting in on 75% of his attempts in yesterday’s match. It’ll be interesting to see how things go if the categories are better suited to him today. Jimmy Rollins (no, not the former MLB player) and Lara Owens are the challengers.
Meanwhile: Quarterfinals #9 and #10 air tonight on the Jeopardy! National College Championship on ABC primetime. This will be at a different time than, and in addition to, the normal syndicated game. One problem that I’ve seen a little bit on Twitter is that a few viewers—especially if Jeopardy doesn’t air on ABC in their area—are confused about this point. They know when Jeopardy is supposed to air in their local area, and they assume that’s the only Jeopardy! episode happening that day. If an important tournament, like a Tournament of Champions, ends up moving to prime time, the show may need to work on making this point abundantly clear in its marketing.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

“Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English. Be positive, not negative.” That was the opening paragraph of the copy style guide for the Kansas City Star. (Yes, I know that Hemingway also wrote for the Toronto Star, but this style guide was Kansas City’s.) This style guide influenced Hemingway’s writing, to the point where William Faulkner mocked him, saying Hemingway “has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary”. Hemingway’s reply: “Does he really think big emotions come from big words? He thinks I don’t know the ten-dollar words. I know them all right. But there are older and simpler and better words, and those are the ones I use.”
