Especially on the back of yesterday’s major upset of Cris Pannullo, which proves that anything can happen these days at this level of Jeopardy!, quarterfinal #3 is shaping up to be an excellent battle. Firstly, we see the return of Hannah Wilson to the stage after she won 8 times last season. Her two opponents are David Sibley and Yungsheng Wang. Yungsheng advanced through Champions Wildcard this past fall and is very strong, while David has been doing significant preparations to improve his own skills since his regular run finished. I am expecting a fiercely-contested three-way battle in today’s episode.

Correct response: What is the (Lockheed) U-2?

The Lockheed U-2 was a famous American Cold War spy plane, generally used for reconnaissance missions. It was built because the Americans believed that Soviet technology (which has been given to the Soviets by the Americans during World War II) could not track aircraft that flew above 65,000 feet. Thus the Americans commissioned the U-2, which could fly at 70,000 feet—beyond the reach of Soviet radar.

Unfortunately, these beliefs were rendered incorrect when Francis Gary Powers began an overflight of the Soviet Union in May 1960—the Americans erred in scheduling the flight on May Day, a major Soviet holiday with significantly less air traffic than usual. The plane was shot down by the USSR and Powers captured.

In a Tournament of Champions situation, this should be a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• With regard to the $1200 short story clue: The clue said “this…amphibian”, and did not ask for the title. Thus, the full title was not required.
• Judging by just how strong David was on the buzzer overall in this game, even though the result didn’t work out, I have no problem with what Hannah did on the last Daily Double. It was a move to pretty much try to put the game away, and it did not work.
• Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
