Warning: This page contains spoilers for the January 16, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category New Nations) for Tuesday, January 16, 2024 (Season 40, Game 92):

In Sept. 2023 the U.S. recognized 2 new nations in free association with New Zealand: Niue & this archipelago

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Sharon Stone, an early childhood intervention manager from Round Rock, Texas

Sharon Stone on Jeopardy!

Katie Palumbo, a museum membership specialist from Amawalk, New York

Katie Palumbo on Jeopardy!

Andy Tirrell, a political science & international relations professor from San Diego, California

Andy Tirrell on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The first group of Season 39’s Champions Wildcard begins today, as we have 27 players competing for one spot in the Tournament of Champions! The first of our quarterfinalists are Andy Tirrell, Katie Palumbo, and Sharon Stone! Andy and Katie both ended the runs of some really strong players in ToCers Cris Pannullo and Yogesh Raut, respectively, which I think will boost their stock in this competition. However, Sharon is the 2-game champion in this matchup! This is definitely a game where absolutely anything can happen!

Also, tonight will see the third of three semifinal matchups in Season 2 of Celebrity Jeopardy!; tonight’s matchup features Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live), Mo Rocca (CBS Sunday Morning) and comedian Heather McMahan; one of these three players will be joining Lisa Ann Walter and Katie Nolan in the final!

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

More information about Final Jeopardy:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

On September 25, 2023, the United States Department of State announced that it had established diplomatic ties between the United States and two Pacific island nations: Niue and the Cook Islands. While neither is yet a full U.N. member state, this does allow for these nations to cooperate with the United States on important Pacific issues, including our current climate crisis.

I’m honestly not sure how this Final Jeopardy is going to play; it’s a good piece of current events trivia, but this also feels very much “you know it or you don’t”; there’s no real extra information here that will get you to a correct response.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: 20th Century Americans; Half A Category; Ballet; TV Cliffhangers; Authors As Book Characters; Rhyme Time)

Sharon and Andy got to the Daily Doubles, both getting things correct, and Andy extending his lead considerably with his. This caused Katie to have to take guesses to catch up, which didn’t work out well for her. (She ended with 7 incorrect in the round). As it was, Andy had a runaway going into a 2-player Final.

Andy 21 correct 1 incorrect
Sharon 8 correct 2 incorrect
Katie 17 correct 10 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Despite Sharon’s hope regarding Andy’s strategy, Andy did not bet it all, and was correct in Final. He’s a semifinalist!

Tonight’s results:

Katie -$1,000 (By rule, did not participate in Final Jeopardy)
Sharon $6,100 – $6,000 = $100 (What is I hope he bet it all)
Andy $21,800 + $1,800 = $23,600 (What are the Cook Islands) (Semi-Finalist)
