After covering the 1924 murder trials of Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner (both were acquitted) for the Chicago Tribune, Maurine Dallas Watkins wrote a play, Chicago, that was based on their respective trials, with Beulah being the inspiration for Roxie and Belva serving as the inspiration for Velma. While the play was adapted into some works during Watkins’s lifetime, the play got new life after Watkins’s death when her estate sold adaptation rights to a group including Bob Fosse. Kander and Ebb, along with Fosse, adapted the play into a hit musical, Chicago, which then became a Best Picture Oscar-winning 2002 film with Renée Zellweger as Roxie. (In fact, the 1996 revival of Chicago is the second-longest running show in Broadway history behind Phantom of the Opera).
While I was personally unaware of the character’s name and therefore did not get Final Jeopardy correct today, I would absolutely say that the main character of a Best Picture-winning film—where the actress received an Oscar nomination for portraying the role—is fair game in Final Jeopardy.
