Happy Tuesday! It’s Day 7 of Savannah Guthrie’s hosting stint. Through 6 games, $121,680 has been raised for the Bowery Mission. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 19th Century Literary Creatures) for Tuesday, June 22, 2021 (Season 37, Game 192):

The author said the name of this 10-letter creature in his poem meant “the result of much excited discussion”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Sandy Olive, a high school English teacher from St. Louis, Missouri

Sandy Olive on Jeopardy!

Bridget Gallagher, an accounts receivable clerk from Austin, Texas

Bridget Gallagher on Jeopardy!

Michael Tran, a Ph.D. student from El Monte, California (1-day total: $12,879)

Michael Tran on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Michael played a strong game yesterday, especially at the bottom of the board in Double Jeopardy!; that should serve him well! If he can keep the incorrect responses down, he’ll have an even better chance of win #2.

Did you know that Jeopardy! is giving away the Alexa Echo Show 10? Sweepstakes information is here.

Today’s Clue of the Day for the Alexa sweepstakes: SCULPTURE & STATUES: This Rodin sculpture was originally called “The Poet”

Clue of the Day correct response: What is “The Thinker”?

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is (the) Jabberwock?

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The Jabberwock is the title character of Lewis Carroll’s famed poem “Jabberwocky”, included in 1871’s Through the Looking-Glass, the sequel to 1865’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; “jabber” meaning “excited discussion” and “wock” from the Anglo-Saxon “wocer”, meaning “offspring” or “the fruit of”.

That being said: today’s Final Jeopardy! clue is as much an exercise of parsing what the writers want as it is coming up with the response. Firstly, both the category and the clue specify “creature”. (This should hopefully keep players from responding with Carroll.) The more important part of the clue, though, is “10-letter”. This, again, pins the clue to “Jabberwock” (the creature) as opposed to “Jabberwocky” (the poem). Whether or not you think that the writers should be hinging clues on such a distinction is another matter, but the writers have certainly made their intentions clear on this clue. I would definitely say that the lines “Beware the Jabberwock, my son! / The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!” are very apt for today’s Final.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Through 7 days, $145,680 has been donated to the Bowery Mission. $1,840,656 has been donated to all charities.
  • Savannah should have communicated why Bridget’s response was incorrect. Just saying “No” will lead to a lot more viewer confusion. Being that a full credit roll took place, there was absolutely time for a more detailed explanation.
