Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Stephen Webb survived a big scare last night to win his important 5th game! Today he faces Long Nguyen and Jessica Ashooh. As some people on Reddit like to point out, Long is definitely known in the trivia community—he’s one of the stronger individual players in the Online Quiz League. Stephen might find himself in another battle today!
Meanwhile, I made the “mistake” of reading Facebook comments for one of those tabloid articles about Jeopardy! this morning—it was for one of the many articles that piggyback off the “vox Twittuli”-style articles put out by The Sun that complains about Mayim Bialik’s hosting. And I found the comments surprisingly enlightening. Those comments were almost universal in their praise—of Mayim Bialik. This serves as a reminder of a couple of things: that Mayim Bialik is a popular host of Jeopardy! and that maybe—just maybe—The Sun is acting improperly by its constant putdowns of Mayim.
Also, for some reason that I’m not quite sure of, the Jeopardy! website is showing Stephen’s total as much lower than it actually is. I’m not sure why they’ve simply left out some winnings somewhere, but I hope it gets fixed soon.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Mongolia—one of the world’s great empires under the leadership of Genghis Khan (who, according to Bill & Ted, ravaged both China and Oshman’s Sporting Goods), is now the world’s second-largest landlocked country, behind Kazakhstan.
Today’s Final is probably going to play generally easier—but, again, that is perfectly acceptable to me. I think that easy Finals are important in the grand scheme of things, as it keeps the wagering aggressive and players betting to win. If Final Jeopardy! is always hard, intelligent players would adjust their strategy accordingly and play more conservatively, and the game as a whole would be hurt by it.

In a perfect first round, Stephen had the best time of it, picking up 14 correct and having nearly $10,000 at the second commercial. Long, however, pulled himself into second with a True Daily Double.

Long was cruising in the Scrambled U.S. History category, and then found the Daily Double himself. He went all-in for over $12,000—but this was the only clue in the category to stump Long, so back down to $0 he went. Stephen entered Final with a runaway at $18,000, to Jessica’s $6,000 and Long’s $400.

- Even though it did not work out for him, Long’s decision to go for a True Daily Double was 100% correct for the situation. It was a strong category for him, he was losing to a 5-time champion, and it was absolutely the correct play. More people need to play that way.
