Welcome to spring! (Where I am there is still a significant amount of snow on the ground that’s yet to melt and there have been high winds for the past 36 hours. Welcome to spring!) Melissa kicked off spring with her strong victory last night; tonight, she defends against Brandon Anderson and Charlotte Diffendale.
Regarding the hullaballoo over last night’s episode: Melissa said “McGregor”, not “Gregor”. The judges have the ability to isolate contestant audio and are more than willing to stop the tape to confirm responses. This site’s Site Comment Policy says as much: “The judges have the ability to isolate contestant audio and are always willing to stop tape to confirm.” It also says, “This sort of behavior [trying to tell the show a contestant did not respond properly] is akin to those who used to call into the PGA Tour with rules violations. It’s incredibly gauche.” Had Melissa said ‘Gregor’ last night, the judges would have told us so. Furthermore, many fans could probably stand to use a reminder about the bandwagon fallacy: just because a large group of people agrees with you does not mean you are right.

On December 29, 1170, Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered by four knights of King Henry II; Henry and Thomas had been at loggerheads over clerical privilege and whether the church should be above the law. After a fiery Christmas 1170 sermon when a number of bishops were excommunicated, Henry allegedly said “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest!”—four knights then took it upon themselves to murder the Archbishop, who was immediately declared a martyr by the Catholic church and canonized. Canterbury Cathedral immediately became the most important religious site in England.
