After a difficult game yesterday that didn’t hit our players particularly well, Andrew Jones is our new champion. Today, he faces off against Aaron Dmiszewicki and Katie Tarara.

Let’s talk about yesterday’s game a little bit more. A category with the word “Jeoportmanteau” in it has now run 12 times, dating all the way back to 2004. The category isn’t going anywhere. Just because it didn’t play well with the players in the studio doesn’t make it a bad category. Some players just aren’t good at wordplay—I went 4 for 5 in the category at home. You don’t see me calling for the de-emphasis of literature categories because I was a poor literature player in quiz bowl and for fewer movie clues because film was my worst category in “trash” tournaments. Wordplay is an equally important part of the Jeopardy! canon as sports—it just can’t be studied as well by memorizing J! Archive—and so a small minority of fans want to see it given the Old Yeller treatment. (And the tabloid clickbait media is happy to play along and amplify it, because outrage drives clicks.) This is also a reminder that the outrage machine is mostly driven by people who were never able to live out their dream of being a contestant on the show, and are choosing to take their frustrations at not being cast out by complaining about the show on a nightly basis.

A cross between literature/theatre and film? How dare Jeopardy! put such an abomination into my favorite television program! Get this absolute filth off my television screen! (For those readers here for whom identifying sarcasm is more difficult, I point you in the direction of my Pregame Thoughts.)

Okay, now, more seriously: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a famous 1960s play by Edward Albee, whose title was taken from the Disney song “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” from 1933’s Three Little Pigs. Martha and George, the two main characters, sing a version of the Disney song, replacing “Big Bad” with Virginia. However, many stagings replace the song with “Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush” due to its similar meter and public domain status.

This is the sort of Final Jeopardy clue that I think I’d like to see more of, though: it’s an interesting way of asking about a topic that the show has asked about numerous times.
