Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Musical Theater) for Tuesday, November 22, 2022 (Season 39, Game 52):
The pair at the center of tumult in this long-running show were originally going to be a Jewish girl & a Catholic boy
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Etienne Lepine, a software engineer from Lafayette, Colorado
David Stiasny, a pediatrician from Highland Park, Illinois
Cris Pannullo, a customer success operations manager from Ocean City, New Jersey (11-day total: $356,702)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
The Tournament of Champions is over, as Jeopardy! returns to regular play. Fortunately, its homepage had the important contestant information on it—and the dead tree New York Times had a fresh Clue of the Day. I’m sure the website will return to its normal self by the end of the week. Cris Pannullo returns as an 11-day champion after an exactly two-month taping layoff; he won his first eleven games on three consecutive days (August 8–10), while the remainder of this week’s episodes appear to have been taped on October 10. (The taping times as per On Camera Audiences, with the “afternoon” session starting at 1:00 instead of the usual 2:00, certainly appear to imply a four-episode taping week and not a five.) Today’s challengers are Chicago-area pediatrician Dave Stiasny and Colorado’s Etienne Lepine.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Jerome Robbins’s first envisioning of the famous musical West Side Story was actually “East Side Story”—a story, set during Easter/Passover, with a Jewish girl as “Juliet” and an Italian Catholic as “Romeo”, set in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. However, the project got shelved when they realized that it was too similar to the 1920s show Abie’s Irish Rose, and with gang turf wars in the headlines, it got recentered to feature rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, and a Polish Catholic man and a Puerto Rican woman.
