Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

It is Tuesday, and today is quarterfinal #3 of the Diamonds bracket of Fall 2023’s Champions Wildcard—this match is between February 2021 “giant killer” Steve Crupi (he ended Zach Newkirk’s run), December 2020 champ John Vigna, and recent Second Chance winner Jilana Cotter. Jilana was moved into the Diamonds bracket due to her pregnancy as there were concerns that having her tape in the fourth Champions Wildcard bracket would result in her flying too close to her due date.

I do think that Jilana having played most recently does make her a favorite in this match—however, John’s two games were almost polar opposites of each other. If the “$20,000 Coryat” John shows up to this one, I don’t think there’s much anyone can do about it.

I guess you could say “Things Have Changed” in the world of trivia! For years, it was a chestnut of a trivia question that George Bernard Shaw was the only person with both a Literature Nobel and an Academy Award; the 1925 Nobel Prize winner in Literature won his Oscar in 1939 after having adapted Pygmalion for the 1938 film version of the play. However, that changed in 2016 when Bob Dylan—who received an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2001 for the song “Things Have Changed” from the 2000 film Wonder Boys—was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

For me, “Nobel Prize” + “singer-songwriter” leads me straight to the correct response—will our contestants be able to make the same jump on stage? Also, as I like to say, straightforward Final Jeopardy clues help keep Final Jeopardy betting as aggressive as it needs to be to make for exciting television.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• My only explanation for Jilana’s bet was that she made two separate math errors: firstly, it appears as though she doubled $9,600 to reach $18,200 and not $19,200; secondly, she then added a dollar instead of subtracted a dollar, coming up with $801 instead of $799.
