Correct response: What is “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”?

The phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” was adapted from a Welsh proverb from the mid-1860s: “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread”. In the early 1900s, the apple, needing a new method of consumption after the burgeoning temperance movement threatened its use as the main ingredient of alcoholic cider, got new life after “an apple a day…” was popularized; fruit being marketed as a healthy eating choice led to apples remaining an American staple. Stinson was director of the Missouri State Fruit Experiment Station when he gave the address at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.
