Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today’s game originally aired on November 10, 2021.

It was no surprise that today’s game made it onto a “best of Season 38” set of episodes—in case this game is new to you, scroll down, and look at the scores! Dane Reighard came into today’s game as a 2-day champion.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is Indonesia?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

At over 270 million, Indonesia is the world’s 4th-most populous country, and the most populous whose land is located mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. Brazil is the 6th-most populous overall and the second-most populous mostly-Southern Hemisphere country – the northern reaches of both Indonesia and Brazil do extend north of the Equator.

I know personally that geography is a strong point of mine, but I’m also at a loss to determine what any incorrect responses to this clue might be from a player. There aren’t that many Asian countries whose land is mostly south of the Equator in the first place, and certainly not any with any sort of population. I feel as though adding the continent nerfed this clue. On the flip side, this is the exact sort of clue that I talk about when it comes to “keeping the Final Jeopardy! wagers honest” (i.e. that there needs to be easy Final Jeopardy! clues in order to prevent players from betting too conservatively as a rule). Considering Dane’s choice on Monday not to bet to completely cover second place, this is the sort of clue that could prove to be his undoing—especially if a more strategically minded player took note of what happened.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Today’s “Clue of the Day” was: This poison gets its name partly from the Greek for “dark blue”; it was in the category Word Origins. The correct response: What is cyanide?

  • $26,000 is the second-highest non-leading score going into Final Jeopardy! in the history of the show, behind only Adam Levin on April 29, 2019.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Andrew $30,000 Dane $26,000 Mary $4,800)

Dane: Bet between $8,001 (covering any of Andrew’s conservative range) and $16,399 (to make sure you keep second place over Mary). (Actual bet: $25,999)

Mary: If Andrew bets to cover Dane and is incorrect, he falls to $7,999. In order to have any hope of winning, you must bet at least $3,200. (Actual bet: $0)

Andrew: Standard cover bet over Dane is $22,001. (Actual bet: $22,001)
