Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

On a day where winter has decided to rush in and announce its arrival in a very loud way to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, we have a pair of Canadians as our challengers to a very strong two-day champion in Libby Jones. Unfortunately, it’s not an “official” two-Canadian game, as while Ron Lalonde (yes, Ray Lalonde’s twin brother) is originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, the medical physicist has chosen to bill himself as from his current location of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, our second Canadian is Hamilton, Ontario’s Sarah Murphy, who appears to freelance in a similar fashion as something I often did in the 2010s: transcript editing. (Though I often worked in a slightly earlier part of the process.)

In terms of what’s at stake here for Libby: assuming things work in a similar fashion to this year—and I can’t see at this point why they wouldn’t—Libby is very likely going to be part of next year’s Champions Wildcard. She would guarantee a spot at least in Champions Wildcard with a win today. (Let’s be honest here, though: with what she’s already won in total, she’s probably seeing an invite to next year’s Tournament of Champions invite if that happens.) Will that happen for her? Or will one of the Canadians take the champion’s lectern tomorrow?

The original Poet’s Corner was a section of Westminster Abbey in London, that has served as a burial or commemoration place for numerous British poets, playwrights, and writers over the centuries. However, in 1983, at a commemoration of the 200^th anniversary of the birth of Washington Irving, the dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Rev. James Parks, announced that an American Poet’s Corner would be formed at the cathedral, with Irving, Walt Whitman, and Emily Dickinson the first inductees. As of 2025, 56 poets have been so honored in New York City.

Did I know before today that there was an American Poet’s Corner? Nope. However, I was able to put together pieces of other knowledge that I had—namely, that a Poet’s Corner exists in England and that Sylvia Plath was an American poet—in order to solve today’s Final Jeopardy clue. Thus, I have to give two thumbs up to the writers today for this Final.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• Courtesy Libby’s sibling Evan who found this: Ron & Ray Lalonde are the second set of twins to become Jeopardy! champions; twins Phyllis & Paula Massengale won in 1989 & 1990, respectively.

• One major reason why contestants shouldn’t “let” a player in third stick around for Final Jeopardy is that those last clues can often be crucial for changing the Final Jeopardy wagering scenarios. For example, Libby’s correct response on the final clue ensured that today’s game wasn’t a three-quarters game—and, in fact, it did get a wagering mistake out of Ron.
