What will Andy Tirrell do for an encore? Yesterday he played giant killer, defeating a 21-day champion in Cris Pannullo. Today, the San Diego professor faces off against Tammy Groner and Ron Cheung.

Going off on a bit of a tangent: I’ve been doing a lot of research as of late into the early history of the Alex Trebek version of the show, and it seems to me as if the San Diego TV market played a positive role in the early history of the show. One of the first contestant searches, in early September 1984, was in San Diego—the Los Angeles Times sent a reporter to cover it. Moreover, during what I’m now calling the “Dark Ages” between when KCBS Los Angeles decided in late October that it would rather play Quincy reruns in the afternoon and when independent station KCOP purchased the rights to air the show in early January 1985, the only way to watch Jeopardy! in Southern California was via KCST (now KNSD)—UHF channel 39. The ramifications of that reverberate to this day, as it’s certainly made J! Archive’s job significantly more difficult in terms of getting Season 1 episodes.

When President Harding died in August 1923, Calvin Coolidge, then Vice President, had been visiting his family in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. When the Coolidge family received word of Harding’s death, it was suggested that Coolidge receive the Oath of Office as soon as possible to preserve presidential continuity. Coolidge’s father, John Calvin Coolidge, Sr., was a Vermont notary public and justice of the peace and administered the Oath of Office. In March 1925, after Coolidge had been re-elected President, Chief Justice William Howard Taft—himself a former President—administered the Oath.

I enjoyed this Final Jeopardy! clue today—it’s a fun story for those who aren’t aware of it, but if you can piece it together in time (i.e. knowing that Taft was Chief Justice following his Presidency), it’s gettable even if you don’t know the first part.
