After a well-played game yesterday, Toronto lawyer James Hirsh is your new Jeopardy! champion. Having won over $32,000 yesterday, he defends his title for the first time against Boston’s Lauren Vincent and Seattle’s Kevin Kodama. Kevin does have quiz bowl experience at the University of Washington; I do think he’ll have a strong game on the Alex Trebek Stage as a result.

In 1872’s English Hours, Henry James wrote about the megalith on Salisbury Plain, “there is something in Stonehenge almost reassuring to the nerves”. The structure is believed to have been built between 3100 BC and 1600 BC and is still one of he most famous landmarks in Great Britain.
The fact that there is no country in this clue certainly makes it much more difficult, in my opinion; I know at home I guessed the Parthenon, being unfamiliar with the Henry James work—I would not be surprised if I were matched by at least one player on the Alex Trebek Stage.

Game Recap:
Much like the 2025 American League Championship Series, today’s game saw an extremely competitive battle between Toronto and Seattle. Also much like the 2025 ALCS, things were determined in Toronto’s favor thanks to the Daily Doubles. James doubled up through DD2 to take the lead, and while Kevin retook the lead by the time he found DD3, a $15,200 Daily Double bet, followed by an incorrect response, handed James a runaway victory and victory #2. Even though James lost $5,400 in Final, his two-day total is a shade under US$50,000 through 2 wins. (That’s a shade under CA$65,000 right now.)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Allow me to make my stance on this abundantly clear: If you think Kevin’s bet sizing on DD3 was a mistake, you are incorrect and are looking at this solely with the benefit of hindsight and results. Since the start of Season 40, $800 Daily Doubles in Double Jeopardy have been responded to at a 70.2% correct response rate, and it was in a category where Kevin had been correct at the $2000 level. If there’s an opportunity to just about put the game away, it is on a second-row Daily Double two-thirds of the way through Double Jeopardy. Kevin was playing to win, instead of playing not to lose; sometimes that doesn’t work out, but I think he should be proud of his gameplay and shouldn’t make many changes when the inevitable Second Chance invitation comes. (And maybe he should ignore the armchair quarterbacks on the Internet with 0 combined games of Jeopardy! experience who will undoubtedly try to question this move.)
- Because this is probably going to end up upsetting someone with lots of CB knowledge and who also forgot the category, much like James did: While “20” does refer to location, the word “location” does not contain the letters “out” in order as specified by the category—the word “whereabouts” does, though.
