Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Famous Paintings) for Wednesday, July 19, 2023 (Season 39, Game 223):
A German guidebook to a 1937 World’s Fair dismissed it as a “hodgepodge of body parts that any four-year-old could have painted”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Liz Cotrufello, a 4th grade teacher from Broomall, Pennsylvania
Sean Weatherston, a physical therapist from Nampa, Idaho
David Bederman, an attorney from Los Angeles, California (1-day total: $28,401)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
A number of diehards thought after Friday that Daniel Moore would have a longer run than the two games he did win; on yesterday’s episode, though, David Bederman—who moonlights as a DJ—became Jeopardy! champion. Today, he embarks on his first title defense against Idaho’s Sean Weatherston and Pennsylvania’s Liz Cotrufello.

Pablo Picasso’s famous painting Guernica was painted in response to the April 1937 German bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The Spanish Republican government had commissioned Picasso to create a mural for the Spanish pavilion at the 1937 Paris World’s Fair. (That would certainly explain the Germans’ cold reaction towards the painting in Paris.) At Picasso’s request, the painting was not delivered to Spain until 1981, after Spain had instituted a constitutional monarchy.
