Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category European Countries) for Wednesday, June 7, 2023 (Season 39, Game 193):
Of all the nations that border Italy, the one that didn’t exist in 1990
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Collette Lee, a middle school math teacher from Paxton, Illinois
Kristine Rembach, a human rights lawyer originally from Ghent, New York
Suresh Krishnan, a networking engineer from Suwanee, Georgia (1-day total: $10,600)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Suresh Krishnan from Georgia is our defending champion; he picked up $10,600 in winning yesterday. The prediction model is rather sour on Suresh’s chances of winning more, but you never know—outgoing champion Jared Watson was very strong on the signaling device, and there’s always a chance that Suresh will get the timing down this time out.
Meanwhile, all of our opening round categories today appear to be Stephen Sondheim musicals: Into the Woods, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Passion, and Merrily We Roll Along.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Playing this Final at home, I definitely knew it was going to be a former Yugoslav republic after seeing the clue—knowing the map of Europe enough to get this correct is a difficult task, especially when knowing the map of Europe has traditionally been a struggle for many contestants. I’ll be impressed with anyone—contestant or home viewer—who gets this correct.
Meanwhile, Italy borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia; until 1991, Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia; it and Croatia were the first states to secede (Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as what is now North Macedonia, soon followed).
If I was to guess, I would say that Croatia, as well as potentially the Czech Republic, or even Slovakia, would be potential incorrect guesses to this clue.

Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Into The Woods; Company; Follies; A Little Night Music; Passion; Merrily We Roll Along)
Things started off well for our players; Suresh and Colletter both had good scores after the Jeopardy! Round. Unfortunately, Kristine’s incorrect response on the Daily Double prevented her score from being there.
Statistics at the first break (15 clues):
Collette 5 correct 1 incorrect
Suresh 4 correct 0 incorrect
Kristine 2 correct 0 incorrect
Today’s interviews:
Collette got in trouble in Japan at a spa because of a tattoo.
Kristine quit her job to do legal aid for refugees.
Suresh has two daughters; he built a Taj Mahal Lego set with them.
Statistics after the Jeopardy round:
Suresh 9 correct 0 incorrect
Collette 8 correct 3 incorrect
Kristine 5 correct 1 incorrect
Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:
Suresh $5,800
Collette $3,600
Kristine $800
Double Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Astronomical Anagrams; Join The Club; The Presidential Line Of Succession, Today; Etymology; A Novel Character Breakdown; A ’90s Kid)
In a round that absolutely did not play to the contestants’ strengths, Triple Stumpers were the order of the day. However, only two incorrect responses were given (one on the Daily Double). To me, that’s a sign that the writers may have gone slightly too hard on this one. As it was, Kristine getting the last Daily Double correct meant that she led going into Final!
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Kristine 10 correct 1 incorrect
Suresh 11 correct 0 incorrect
Collette 12 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 33 (2 today).
Scores going into Final:
Kristine $8,500
Suresh $7,000
Collette $3,500
Both Collette and Suresh got Final correct—Suresh is now a 2-day champion! He’ll go for win #3 tomorrow.
Tonight’s results:
Collette $3,500 + $3,499 = $6,999 (What is Slovenia?)
Suresh $7,000 + $3,499 = $10,499 (What is Slovenia?) (2-day total: $21,099)
Kristine $8,500 – $5,501 = $2,999 (What is Montenegro?)

Andy’s Thoughts:
As best as I can tell, no overall show records were set in this game. The overall known record for the number of Triple Stumpers was set on February 23, 2005. Additionally, I am loath to report on such matters, as it usually ends up being a cudgel of sorts to beat abuse onto the contestants. It’s an unfortunate situation where the material on the day just didn’t suit the players’ strengths. I personally invite every single person who thinks they can do better to put their money where their mouth is and take the Anytime Test.
Today’s box score: June 7, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Kristine $8,500 Suresh $7,000 Collette $3,500)
Suresh: I would recommend making the minimum cover bet over Collette—$1.(Actual bet: $3,499)
Kristine: Standard cover bet over Suresh is $5,501. (Actual bet: $5,501)
Collette: I would recommend going all-in, to defend against the possibility that Suresh might bet exactly $1. (Actual bet: $3,499)
