Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Oscar-Winning Songs) for Wednesday, May 18, 2022 (Season 38, Game 178):

Johnny Mercer’s lyrics to this 1961 Oscar-winning song once began, “I’m Holly”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Audrey Kamzan, a pediatric hospitalist from Los Angeles, California

Adriana Ramírez, a writer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Adriana Ramírez on Jeopardy!

Ryan Long, a rideshare driver from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3-day total: $70,000)

Ryan Long on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Ryan Long, the Philadelphia rideshare driver, has picked up three victories—he’s still not in the top 15 for November’s Tournament of Champions, though! He needs one more to really help his chances. Today, though, we have a yinzer/jawn battle, as challenger Adriana is from western Pennsylvania!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

“I’m Holly / Like I want to be / Like holly on a tree back home. / Just plain Holly / With no dolly / No mama, no papa / Wherever I roam”. Those were the original lyrics that Johnny Mercer set to Henry Mancini’s song that eventually turned into “Moon River”, the iconic song from the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which starred Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: Historic Americans; Beastly Book Characters; Museums for Foodies; Planes, Trains & Automobiles; Setting, The Broadway Stage; Spot “ify”

Propped up by the first Daily Double, Ryan picked up 8 correct in each half of Single Jeopardy to have a small lead after 15 clues and a big lead after 30!

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: You Never Take Me To…; Trojan War Handbook; Science; Hodgepodge; TV Comedies by Siblings; From the Greek for…

Ryan extended his lead in the first half of the round, and then made a big move on the first Daily Double, picking up a big $8,000! This meant that it was crucial for Audrey to pick up the second Daily Double. Unfortunately for Audrey, Adríana picked up control and got to the last Daily Double first. Unfortunately, Adríana fell into the red on that Daily Double, and was unable to get back out of the hole before Final Jeopardy. Scores going into Final were Ryan holding a runaway at $26,600, Audrey at $7,200, and Adríana out of Final at -$200.

The runaway was crucial for Ryan, as only Audrey got Final Jeopardy today; Ryan may have hurt his Tournament of Champions chances by a $10,000 bet in Final; he does pull himself into the field at the moment, though, and will relegate Christine Whelchel out of the top 15. He’ll go for win #5 tomorrow!
