Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 20th Century Leaders) for Wednesday, October 12, 2022 (Season 39, Game 23):
In a Sept. 3, 1939, speech, he said, “Everything that I have worked for…has crashed into ruins”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Fernando Villafuerte, a graduate student from Pasadena, California
Elizabeth Meisenzahl, a student from Lima, New York
Cris Pannullo, a customer success operations manager from Ocean City, New Jersey (8-day total: $275,502)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
So far this week on Jeopardy!, Cris Pannullo has won $113,422. And it’s just Wednesday. The 8-day champion is playing in a style reminiscent of Matt Amodio and running up very impressive scores. He can be beaten, though—Mike Elliott gave Cris a big run for his money on yesterday’s program. Today, our challengers are Elizabeth Meisenzahl and Fernando Villafuerte. Will Cris make it to win #9?
If you’ve spent time on Jeopardy!’s social media feeds over the last 24 hours, you’d have noticed plugs for the Idina Menzel category in today’s Jeopardy! round. While I’ve seen advance plugs when the news teams at some of the show’s local affiliates deliver categories, I can’t recall the last time a celebrity got to plug their category in advance. (Not that I mind, it’s just something that I find interesting.)
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

This quote comes from British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Britain had just declared war on Nazi Germany; Chamberlain’s appeasement policy had failed to prevent war. Chamberlain’s full quote was, “This is a sad day for all of us, and to none is it sadder than to me. Everything that I have worked for, everything that I have hoped for, everything that I believed in during my public life, has crashed into ruins. There is only one thing left for me to do; that is, to devote what strength and powers I have to forwarding the victory of the cause for which we have to sacrifice so much. I cannot tell what part I may be allowed to play myself; I trust I may live to see the day when Hitlerism has been destroyed and a liberated Europe has been reestablished.”
