Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Sports Legends) for Wednesday, October 13, 2021 (Season 38, Game 23):

When Johnny Bench broke his record, this man wrote, “I always thought the record would stand until it was broken”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Mary Garvey, a pastor from Huntingdon, Pennsylvania

Mary Garvey on Jeopardy!

Bilal Ali, a product manager from Seattle, Washington

Bilal Ali on Jeopardy!

Jonathan Fisher, an actor originally from Coral Gables, Florida (2-day total: $51,700)

Jonathan Fisher on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: A lot of fans are missing Matt Amodio’s run as champion, but after yesterday’s game, I think we can safely say that he was dethroned by a very worthy champion in Jonathan, who picked up a very strong total before Final Jeopardy. Moreover, this proves just how strong of a player Jessica was on Monday, who very nearly beat both Matt and Jonathan herself! Jonathan will be looking to extend his streak to 3 today against Mary and Bilal.

On a slightly more personal note: From October 16-23, there will be a 168-hour charity live-streaming relay on Twitch to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada; more information can be found at gamersvsms.ca. 1 in 385 Canadians live with MS. I’ll be doing my shift as part of the relay on Thursday, October 21 from 2:00 AM to 8:00 AM EDT on my own Twitch channel, twitch.tv/andythequizzer/.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: Who is Yogi Berra?

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

When Yogi Berra retired, he held MLB records for hits, runs, and home runs by a catcher; Cincinnati Reds catcher passed Berra’s home run mark in the summer of 1980, leading to a telegram and the aforementioned quote from Berra.

In 2015, Johnny Bench tweeted out the telegram that Berra sent him: “Congratulations on breaking my home run record last night. I always thought the record would stand until it was broken. It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Best of luck the rest of the season, but take it easy on Dale and the Pirates. Maybe we’ll see you in October. Yogi” (Dale was Yogi’s son who was an infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates at the time.)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Contestants should always wager in Final Jeopardy based on the game situation and not on the category, as even in a category that looks intimidating, you could always see a clue as straightforward as this one. It always amuses me greatly to see contestants run scared from a sports category, only to see the clue go 3/3 in Final.
